A ways north of Phoenix, Arizona is red rock country. It comes out of nowhere, shooting up out of a rolling landscape of pine trees. My Dad, Brother and I visited Sedona in March and it was still cold up there in the high country. A bit north of Sedona we even saw some snow. Montezuma's Castle National Monument on the way to Sedona offered a chance to learn a little about the Sinagua people that built the impressive cliff dwellings
The Sinagua built their dwellings in a cliff alcove, safely above the floodplain of Beaver Creek.
Impressive red rock country.
These colorful cliffs form the edge of the Colorado Plateau.
A red rock butte.
The temperature was cold and there were dark clouds, but we stayed mostly dry.
Some bands of rock erode faster than others, forming slopes rather than vertical walls. Both are seen here.
